Catherine Kitts elected councillor in Cumberland byelection

Biography

In 2018, Catherine Kitts ran for the role of City Councillor (Ward 1 - Orléans) in the City of Ottawa municipal election. She came in second out of 17 candidates in her riding, losing by only 264 votes. During her campaign, she was vocal about the need for more female voices on city council as only 4 of the 24 elected representatives were women, at the time. After the 2018 election, that number rose to 7/24. Kitts experienced first-hand the challenges young women face when running in a political campaign and continues to advocate for female representation in elected office.
